Focus on Utah

Currently the number of infections per week in Utah is stable at under 400 new cases per day. The rate dropped by about 10 cases per week each week in April 2021.

The number of deaths in Utah has risen from 5 two weeks ago to 18 last week and now 22 this week. If you look at the chart of deaths you can see the well defined climb in deaths. Again, I cannot explain why this is happening.

On the vaccination front 42.2% of all adults in Utah are now fully vaccinated. We are headed toward the 50% level by the end of May. If you look at the grey and yellow lines on the vaccination chart you can see how the gap between the two has widened considerably over the past two weeks. The widening indicates that the flow of vaccine into the state is outpacing the number of doses being administered. At week's end Utah had 384,305 doses of vaccine on hand, the largest amount so far recorded. If the state does not take action to "slow the flow" of vaccine in the state this number will keep getting larger and larger. Demand for the vaccine has slowed from 27,000 does per day two weeks ago to 19,272 last week.

Focus on the United States

I've stopped doing weekly numbers on all 50 states as the U.S. now seems to have pretty good control of the virus.

I've noted that many of the states battling new outbreaks in April were states where lockdowns had kept spread low, but when they stated to open up, the lack of a large number of prior cases allowed new outbreaks to take hold. Such states include Michigan, Oregon, and Washington.

The number of cases in the United States dropped this week to 358,000 down from 395,000 cases the prior week. The number for the week ending April 4, 2021 was 449,000. Thus the total drop in April was quite significant and can be attributed to the growth in the number of people vaccinated.

Focus on the rest of the World

In Europe, case counts were down again across the board. This is the 3rd week in a row where Europe has improved.

The story in Asia, particularly south Asia is not very good. The number of cases in India was actually down 741,000 from the prior week to a mere 981,973 new cases. India had been doing remarkably well until recently. I heard on CNBC that the outbreak make have been triggered by numerous political rallies and holidays that brought thousands out into crowded streets. They backed this up with pictures of the same. An English speaking reporter in New Delhi said that the city is "full of smoke" from thousands of rushed cremations taking place across the city.

The case count in Thailand rose this week to 13,524. That compares to just 68,984 cases reported for the full pandemic. The death count for the past week was 105 out of a reported total of 245. South Korea also reported over 9,000 cases last week, or about 7% of their total cases for the pandemic.

Brazil continues to suffer from an elevated new case rate.

Highlights of the Pandemic
  • Most outrageous statement by any U.S. Politician: Governor Newsom of California said 56% of his state would be infected. That would be about 22 million people. Three weeks after his statement, the state has 0.01% of its citizens infected I can promise you that will not happen. So far California is a shining example to the nation with a 0.04% infection rate (April 7).
  • On April 7 Dr. anthony Fauci, the leading epidimeologist for the U.S. government has complemented Utah effort at social distancing, even though our infection rate is at 0.06%, somewhat above California's rate.
  • I was wrong that the virus does not like hot weater based on many tropical counties having small case counts. As it turns out they were just doing a great job limiting infections
  • Much of the U.S. opened too early at the end of May, thinking the worst was over, at that point too many people assumed it was all over and everything could return to normal. They turned out to be "dead" wrong.
