This week's number of new infections dropped from 369 per day to 334 per day, the largest weekly drop in over a month.
Deaths remain higher than expected based on the number of cases. Last week there were 20 deeaths versus 22 the prior week. Apparently, a significant number of Covid-19 deaths have to be certified by the state medical examiner to determine if Covid-19 was really the cause. It is apparently this delay that is holding the death rate higher than it would otherwise be.
Utah crossed one of those large round number milestones this past week with the number of fully vaccinated Utahns (18+) exceeding 1,000,000. The state's estimated population is between 3.2 and 3.3 million people. When counting only adults (18+) the fully vaccinated count now stands at 46.4%. We should exceed 50% by the end of May 2021.
The number of vaccines on hand at the end of the week was 428,906, increasing a bit more than 50,000 doses for the week Utah has not yet reduced the flow into the state so I expect this value to continue to increase weekly until such action is taken, or 12-15 yr olds are allowed to be vaccinated.
The number of cases in the United States dropped again this week to 290,534 down about 58,000 from the prior week. That's a good amount. The current target is 75,000 cases per week which would be just over 1,000 per day. At that level the chances of getting the disease become quite low.
In Europe, case counts were down again across the board (except for Russia where there was an increase of 5,000 cases). France did a downward adjustment in their total case count.
The number of new cases in India, dropped by more than 1,000,000 to just over 2 million from just over 3 million. That's still a tough situation for the second most populous nation on earth behind China and number three the United States. A full lockdown may be needed to bring the count down to a manageable number.
The case count in Thailand increased from 13,524 to 16,021. Viet Nam and Taiwan were also up, but the increase in Taiwan was minimal.
Brazil continues to suffer from an elevated new case rate with 458,000 new cases last week. Their infection rate is 7.1%, Their death rate is high at 2.78%
